Can I Find Someone Who Looks Like Me in My Library and Bookstores?

Diversity, multiculturalism, tolerance, and acceptance. These are the important and necessary buzz words when it comes to the current world of literature. Libraries and books stores need to ensure that the material selection is updated and current with the trends and needs of today’s society. So with this in mind, one may ask if your child can identify with the characters and storylines that are presented during their story time. I remember growing up as a Filipino American in the 1980s, and noticed that there certainly were not as many Asian characters in the books that I read (and I was an extremely avid reader as a child!) I am happy to say, that upon becoming a teacher during the turn of the century, I noticed a turn of events in terms of diversity in school literature. Students need to see themselves represented in the literature that surrounds them (almost like a mirror). Not only should students see themselves, but it is also important for children to see the beautiful unique multitude of cultures commonly represented on a regular basis!

Here are some tips to help spread multicultural literature into your home:

1. During your family’s traditions or holidays, try to introduce different books with traditions celebrated by others around the world. For example, if you celebrate Christmas, you can incorporate stories about Hanukkah and Kwanzaa as well.

2. When drawing illustrations, try to have your child include multicultural characters/people in the drawing.

3. Embrace or try different food or clothing.

4. Have a variety of diverse books in your child’s book collection.

5. When picking books in the library or bookstore, discuss the multitude of ethnicities offered and represented in the books.
