Digital Versus Actual Printed Books

When I was a young avid reader in the 1980s, I enjoyed borrowing books from the library! I loved the smell of the pages, the crinkle of the plastic jackets, and the excitement of finding another part of my series of favorite books (whether it was the Nancy Drew, Babysitters Club, or V.C. Andrews series!) Currently, as an adult in this world of technology, I still love to borrow or purchase the actual books, but have also grown to love digital books as well. As a kindergarten parent, I’m sure you and your child have your own opinions on whether you enjoy reading from the actual printed book versus a digital book. I have listed a few of the advantages and disadvantages of the two kinds of books. Regardless of what your preference is, I ultimately believe that the goal for your child, whether reading from a book or digital tool, is to help to develop their reading skills and literacy enjoyment. So as long as they are enjoying and learning to read, the outcome is the same!

Advantages of Printed Books:

1. Giving eyes a break from the screen (especially for remote or hybrid learners! Or even avid computer/game players!)

2. Nothing beats sharing personal one on one read aloud moments/discussions, rather than a digital voice.

3. Children may be more distracted by the buttons and technology aspects of the digital books.

4. Children can experience “waiting” for a book-cliffhanger excitement- (whether from library or bookstore), rather than the instant indulgence of downloading an e-book.

5. Printed books teach tactile book handling skills, as well as learning to care for a borrowed library book.

6. Children can appreciate the art and creativity of the illustrators (from both covers and story illustrations.

Advantages of Digital Books:

1. Child can read “independently,” with the help of read aloud features.

2. Read aloud features are great for audial learners.

3. May have dictionary features to help with unfamiliar words and pronunciations.

4. Light allows the ability to read in dimly lit areas.

5. Much lighter in weight than carrying multiple books; may download numerous books as well—and books/stories download instantly!

6. Easier to hold than some of the bigger bulkier books.
