Tips: Discussion Questions During Read Alouds with Your Child

Our kindergarten cuties love nothing better than listening to an engaging story read by someone they know and care about! Read alouds are the perfect time for readers and listeners to bond, as well as practice their reading, listening, comprehension, and even discussion skills through question and answer techniques!

Here are a few prompts/questions that you may use before, during, or after a read aloud with your child:

BEFORE READING:

-“Let’s look at the cover and title of our book. What do you think the story is about?”

-“Where and when do you think this story takes place?”

DURING READING:

-Ask who the characters in the story are and where the story takes place.

-Ask about how they feel about what is happening in the story.

-Ask about any problems or solutions the characters may have and how they could fix them.

AFTER READING:

-Ask to retell the story in his/her own words. (“What happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story?”)

-Ask your child to connect their own experiences with their favorite characters and/or plot of the story.

-“What is your favorite part of the story and why?”
